Festive Fun and Frights in Dallas!
It’s that time of fall when things get a little spooky. And whether you prefer things mild and family-friendly or much more mature and unsettling, we hope you have a wonderful Halloween in Dallas!
We have a variety of suggestions for you if you’re looking for plans. Again, some are more family-friendly than others, and we will denote which ones are made much more for the pleasure of little ones. If we don’t say a place is family-friendly, you will likely want to exercise caution taking your children there.
And of course, before you go anywhere, you should make sure you’re not going to do something to make your feet feel like they’re in a horror movie!
(Hey, we’re a podiatrist. We can’t let you run off and have fun without a little lecture, can we?)
Halloween often involves going out to trick-or-treat or other fun at night. Stick to well-lit areas to help prevent trips, snags and falls.
Costumes themselves might come with obstructive hazards, so try to avoid those as well. Also stick with comfortable, dry, familiar footwear if at all possible. Going with whatever flimsy footwear a costume might provide could complete the look, sure, but it’s not going to guard well against water, smashed pumpkins, and other hazards you might find on the sidewalks.
And for your older costume-wearers, a pair of high heels might go well with a vampire costume, but you’ll be begging for a stake by the end of a dance or other standing event. Be more sensible with your shoes and you’ll have more fun—we promise!

Halloweekend at the Dallas Zoo
This event is for zoogoers of all ages! On Oct. 27 and 28, during normal zoo hours, families can enjoy Halloween-themed fun among the animals.
There will be a spider-themed hay maze, bounce house, obstacle course, face painting, and trick-or-treating stations for the kids. Adults can enjoy craft brews in the beer garden, and everyone can enjoy shows with some of the more crawly and bumpy zoo denizens in the Herpetarium.
The price of regular zoo admission will get you in on all the above events as well. Admission also comes with 6 free tickets for the treat stations, and more can be purchased at the zoo.
Costumes are welcome at Halloweekend, but please do not bring any full masks.
The Parker House
Haunted house attractions are not for everyone (and most often especially not for children). If you do get a thrill out of them, though, you should go to some great ones, right?
The Parker House in Denton, voted as #1 attraction of 2016 by TexasHauntedHouses.com, has three haunted horror trips for you: the Parker’s Mortuary, the Parker Plantation, and Ratliff’s Sanitarium.
The Parker House is open all the way up through Halloween, except for Oct. 29. Tickets are $25 or $40 for a line-skipping “fast pass.”
Family Fun Weekend at Dallas Arboretum
Let’s get back to wholesome family fun, shall we? If you’re not feeling the zoo on Oct. 27 and 28, or just want to see a ton of beautifully displayed pumpkins and fall plants, head to the Family Fun Weekend at Dallas Arboretum instead.
In addition to gardens full of more than 90,000 pumpkins, squash, and gourds, 4,500 Chrysanthemums, and 150,000 other plants all lovingly arranged in beautiful display sand patterns, the weekend just before Halloween will also include trick-or-treating, live music, face painting, and a petting zoo.
Free photos will also be offered with Adventures in Neverland characters Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, and Captain Hook. Donations are appreciated.
Disappearance in Dallas
Escape rooms can be fun at any time of the year, but Halloween-themed games can add a bit darker thrill to it all.
One such experience is Disappearance in Dallas, hosted by Escape Hunt in Dallas. In this scenario, a psychopathic killer has escaped from prison. Since then, several people have gone missing and (surprise!) you’re one of them. You have 60 minutes to escape the killer’s cellar and the terrors that await!
Disappearance in Dallas is running up through Halloween and has a player count of 4-10. It can be an entertaining, brain-burning, and maybe even frightening experience for your group of friends! Please note, however, that nobody below the age of 16 will be allowed to play (although Escape Hunt’s other rooms are made for players 10 and up).
Scary Cheese and Wine
We get it. Not everyone wants candy on Halloween. Some would rather have a more refined treat.
Scardello Artisan Cheese has adults covered with their Scary Cheese and Wine event on Halloween itself. From 7-8:30 p.m., Scardello will discuss and sample some of the more “disturbing” cheeses out there, including a kind that looks like a brain! These cheeses will be paired up with the perfect wines to take that fear away.
Admission for Scary Cheese and Wine is $40 per person. And, naturally, children will not find anything to fill their pails with here.
